Bomag – RS 500
Bomag – RS 500
BRIEF
Measuring almost 10 meters in length and a weight of 30 tons, the RS 500 is one of the largest machines in the BOMAG FAYAT GROUP’s product lineup.
With the implementation of the new milling technology FLEXMIX, the recycler received a complete new design with a hand laminated fibre bonet and a rotary sintered water tank.
ANALYSIS
A road construction machine is a very complex device and must fullfill many technical requirements. Starting with all the functions necessary for driving, to all parts necessary for milling of the asphalt cover and its simultaneous preparation into reusable material, to the protection of the driver and all other persons involved in the milling process, to name just a few.
The essential components of the machine are the engine with the hood, the cab with the driver’s stand that can be moved in the Y-direction, the cooling unit, a water tank for sprinkling, the fuel tank, and the milling box.
The machine has been completely overhauled from the exterior to the interior of the cabin.
IDEATION
Designing such a complex machine, a variety of technical parameters must be considered. This is only possible through intensive and continuous communication with the responsible emgineers.
Due to their very different tasks, the machines of the BOMAG FAYAT GROUP differ greatly in their proportions, size, and arrangement of the respective components. The biggest challenge in designing these machines is therefore applying the current design DNA so that the machine can be unequivocally read as a new model of the BOMAG product family.
FINAL DESIGN
The entire machine has been optimized for a perfect view from the cabin onto the road and the cutting edge. Starting with the deep-drawn hood, the new cabin design generously equipped with glass surfaces, all the way to the sleek desig of the water tank at the rear of the machine.
DETAILS
With its curved rear window and the anthracite colored center panel of the cabin, it was possible to place a large Bomag logo at the level of the windshield – a simple cosmetic feature previously not presented in this way.
To ensure better access for maintenance, handles have been integrated into the hood.
The tank at the rear was designed to clearly show the orientation of the machine.
Using the fenders for water storage, the volume of the water tank could be increased despite a much sleeker design.
FINAL PRODUCT
The RS 500 is a real monster. Over three meters tall and with a 400 kW engine, it’s a real eye-catcher on the construction site.
The enormous size makes it necessary that the cabin can be retracted for transportation, allowing it to pass bridges.
